This week I have TWO tours for you to attend!
Tomorrow – Tuesday 14th May 2013 at 2pm I am taking a Fleet Street walk. This meets at the City Information Centre close to St. Paul’s Cathedral. Join me to discover the remains of a 1420’s monastery, a pub that dates to 1610 & just who was the biggest serial killer in London?
On Wednesday 15th May at 2pm I shall lead the City Highlights tour, which also meets at the City Information Centre. Come along to investigate just where Lloyds Insurance Company & LLoyds Register began & the origins of London’s banking system.
Some of you will have heard about the Geffreye Museum’s grand plans that included demolishing the 1832 Marquis of Lansdown pub close to Hoxton Station on Cremer Street.
A petition was organised & letters written to Hackney Planning Department. This resulted in The Spitalfields Trust, a Camden Designer & myself speaking against the proposed demolition.
The Planning Committee at Hackney Town Hall were not impressed with the plans either & voted 6 against & 2 in favour of the Geffreye musem’s plans.
See link here:
I shall be taking a Fleet Street walk THIS Thursday 9th May at 11 am. Meeting outside the City Information Centre. Come along & discover some desirable & undesirable types associated with this area & discover an ancient monastery crypt.
Then on Wednesday 15th at 2 pm I shall be leading the City Highlights tour. Again this meets at the City Information Centre. This tour takes in some of the very grand City buildings including the Guildhall, the Royal Exchange & the Bank of England. We also wend our way through the ancient City alleys & courts in this part of the City.
I look forward to meeting some of you on these dates.
I thought you would like to hear about the planning application submitted by the Geffreye Museum to (amongst other expansionist ideas), demolish an 1830’s old pub on the perimeter of their land.
To cut a long story short Will from the Spitalfields Trust & Peter from Camden Council plus myself attended the planning application meeting this evening at Hackney Town Hall to speak against the application. Will is very experienced in renovating period buildings on behalf of the Spitalfields Trust & made a good case against the demolition of the pub saying the Trust would be only too willing to renovate it & re-establish it as a Public House.
Peter talked about the design problems & I said that the new design was incongruous & demeaning to the area & that a museum of all places should NOT be demolishing a piece of local history!
Well, the resultant vote was astonishing – 6 Councillors voted with us & only 2 voted fro the museum plans!!
This was qualified by this statement – ” The new design was not of sufficient merit to replace the pub & the harm the loss of the pub would cause did not justify giving planning consent”!!!
So, back to the drawing board for the museum & a (temporary) reprieve for the defunct pub building.
A surprising victory for the working class history of Hackney!!
To view the proposed new building & also that of the pub go:
This is a great site regardless!
Here’s the w inning team!
